Employers Who Discriminate Older Workers Get Retribution? Probably Not

Readers of TODAY wrote to complain against employers who discrimiate against older workers by cutting their pay, retrenching them, etc.

Will these employers ever end up like the older employees whom they mistreat? Probably not. Because these SME employers are either bosses of the company themselves or relations of the boss. So chances of them ending up like the workers whom they ill-treat are zilch. Unless of course their company goes bust and they become bankrupt; poorer than poor.

Then there are those who are highly educated and work as a human resource director of an MNC and treat older workers like shit. Is there a chance of them ending like the senior citizens whom they step on and shove aside? Seems highly unlikely. Afterall, they are the ones who will receive fat severance packages when it's time for them to get the boot or golden handshake because of their old age.

I think nowadays, employers rather hire PRC cleaners than elderly locals - so that they won't get into trouble because locals like to complain mah. So where got chance to get retribution right?

Anyway, the current maintenance contractor of our new office just sent over an army of very beautiful, young PRC cleaners. I think this is a really bad idea because most of the staff here are men. LOL!

You're right. Local employers won't get retribution for mistreating their PRC employees provided the latter don't get so mad at the former until they chop them up into piece or stab them 100 times :p

Beautiful PRC cleaners? Good for the men but bad for the women. Ha, ha, ha...! :D

The thing is, most people are just very bad at communication. What's retrenching without the context? This always reminds me of the PSA and SIA case where they retrenched thousands because of inefficiency and SARS respectively. It's either everyone lose their job or you lose your job.

Fair? It's more of a necessity.

To Teoh Yi Chie: Yup. Companies have been and always will be more concerned with its own survival than the survival of its staff whom it deems redundant. Whenever times are bad, to cut costs, the easiest way is to reduce headcount.

The company's motto is simple: The staff die better than the company die.

Thing is companies don't communicate well to retrenched staff. Retrenched staff must know that if the company is still around, there will be other people who will benefit (those that are drawing salaries) even if it's not themselves.

To Parka: i don't think you would be comforting yourself with words like someone else who has replaced you in your job is benefiting from the salary which you're now deprived of, if you ever get retrenched from you job. Afterall, all of us are primarily concerned with our own survival rather than somebody else's. It's a basic fundamental law and rule of the jungle.
